Adopting My Dog

This is Lando.

We met almost a year ago at a humane pet shop in Los Angeles called Bark n' Bitches. The pet shop has dog food and accessories as well as adoptable dogs you can play with, foster, or adopt from Jimi's Angels.

All of these dogs are rescued from high kill shelters in Los Angeles, San Bernardino and Kern counties where the euthanatia rate is as high as 85%. Many were never taken to the shelter by their owners. They were picked up on the streets as strays by animal control.

What I love about Bark n' Bitches is that the dogs are so well socialized. Because they don't live in cages, they play with other dogs and people all day. It is an environment similar to a doggy daycare where the dogs run around and play together except humans can play too.

This is where Kendall Jenner and Gigi Hadid come to play with pups in the summertime. It's a really trendy place and you can tell the dogs are treated really nicely and get tons of affection.

@barknbitches Yesterday @kendalljenner@gigihadid stopped in to play with some of our pups! Thanks for stopping by ladies! #adoptdontshop #dogsofig#pups #kardashians #toocute#barknbitches

What I don't love about this place is that they don't take care to groom the dogs or walk them often. There are many organizations devoted to beautifying dogs that need homes, but this isn't one of them. Also, the dogs would "do their business" anywhere on the floor of the store, which leads to an unpleasant smell and a poorly potty trained dog.

I went to play with the pups one afternoon with a girlfriend. She scooped up Lando and put him in my arms and said "I think you're really going to like this one." I had been pretty afraid or uncomfortable around dogs to this point, but Lando was so sweet and sleepy I fell in love.

I came by the next day to foster him. I thought, I'll just give him a bath and a nice meal and bring him back to the pet shop next week.

He wasn't easy. He peed outside my kitchen daily, he had extreme separation anxiety and couldn't be away from me for a minute, and he hated the bath.

But he stayed by my side or in my lap for the entire week. He had deep emotive brown eyes. And he loved me.

That was it. After a week taking care of him, I was hooked.

Now, it's impossible to imagine a time when he wasn't my little pup. We're inseparable and in love. Having a dog changes your life, takes so much time, and is really challenging. But it's worth it.

Step Inside My Apartment

I've spent the past few months collecting small items for my apartment. I'll do tutorials for everything crafted soon but for now, here's the photos of my finished decorated dorm bedroom!

Vanity Decorations:

It took me a really long time to find things I liked to decorate my vanity. I stuck to a color palette of pink and blue after seeing Pantone's Colors of the Year. I liked the yin and yang of female and masculine energies and wanted to channel that throughout my room.

I got most of my counter top decorations from Home Goods. If you don't have a location near you, TJ Max also carries a lot of their stuff.

The journals and books I have collected over the years. I like to keep a pretty notebook with me to jot down observations or thoughts. The blue notebook is my Happiness Project Journal where I've been putting a sentence a day.

Everything that wasn't pink or blue I did in cream or gold. Most of the items clustered here were gifts from people who know my obsession with gold.

The Marc Jacobs "Oh, Lola!" perfume I got from my dad, the Gold Glitter Polka Dot Shot Glasses were a gift from a friend, the Love You to the Moon and Back dish in the background is from my boyfriend, and the gold candle is from his parents. The silver heart jewelry box in the right corner was a birthday gift from my best friends in elementary school. It's the only silver piece in my room because I really love it.

Dog Treat Cookie Jars:

These doggie cookie jars are from Home Goods. I use it to keep my pups Denta Stix and Beef Jerky. Every time I leave for work, I give him either a chew or a piece of jerky to keep him distracted. Now he doesn't even look up when I leave for work, he knows the drill. He had such bad separation anxiety before I started doing that so I swear by that trick. The jars are airtight so his jerky doesn't get stale. He won't eat stale treats, such a spoiled pup.

Gold Frames and Contents:

All of the gold frames I picked up from Goodwill or Fallas Stores. I spray painted them all the same color gold. It was a super easy craft I just followed a Pinterest tutorial. I just hung them up with command strips because I'm subleasing my apartment and didn't want to do any damage to the walls.

The painting of the house in the top left was from a seller on Etsy named EmPrintsStudio. It's a print of my sorority house and I'm in love with it.

This watercolor is also from a new Etsy seller named Tall Tale Farms that I highly recommend. The quote is something that's helped me get through some of the roughest times in my life and was shared with me by a dear friend.

Next post I'll share where I got my bedding and other organization items.

Dear internet,

Welcome to my blog!

My name is Leona, I'm 21, I live in Downtown Los Angeles and I'm a Senior at the University of Southern California.

I decided to start this blog because as I ended my term as chapter president of my sorority and begin my last semester in college, I have more free time than I ever had before.

I also finished a Business Communications class last semester where we wrote blog posts in preparation for our final thesis paper, and after I wrote a few blogs on female entrepreneurs my professor suggested I continue.

The main topics I'm going to cover are gender, pet pups, working out, introversion, and LA adventures.

I'll cover gender because as a sociology major with an emphasis on gender and a proud feminist, the experience women have in the workplace and society is really interesting to me.

My little doggy son, Lando, is my most favorite possession and I love reading about dog training and the affects of pup companionship for humans.

I've been lifting weights for four months now at CFLA and am interested in how the skills necessary to workout translate into the workplace.

Personality quizzes usually label me a social introvert, and with all the advice to network I've received as a member of the Trojan Family I would love to learn how to leverage introversion to my advantage at work.

Finally, I'm enjoying my last few months of Wednesday afternoon adventures before I become a Weekend Warrior and love photography, so I'll be sharing adventure photos usually featuring Lando.

Welcome, and thanks for reading!
